Doing Technological Business In Latin America
During these last months I have been in developing countries trying to launch IT business. I have found:
Not enough critical mass of programmers. Every Latin country is small and difficult to find flexibility in the growth if necessary.
Internet broad band is more expensive, when it is found.
Some countries do not have a technological market. Ecuador, for instance has a hand full of IT companies that create technology. This is not a made market. There is no technology department in any bank. Worse yet is venture capital.
Every big IT company is in every country either directly or via office of representation. Typically the prices of the hardware and software are lower than in northern countries.
The legal framework is not appropriate not only for the political instability of the region but also for the particular laws that are necessary to protect the intellectual rights defense.
There are plenty of technical generalist with experience and very few specialist. Since the market is so small the people who graduate generally very soon goes into administration.
If you have a small project for developing it is possible (depending the particulars) to make great a project in terms of money. Maybe the timing could be little longer. Please do not try to finance from local source, very difficult. The sales should be international. Not many companies make a decent living selling internally.

SAP unveiled a long-awaited on-line service that will radically change the company’s business model.
Business ByDesign, is initially a one-size-fits-all software that includes financials, human resources, supply chain and customer relationship management.
The subscription will cost $149 per month per user and $54 per month per five users for a pared-down version.
Base package aimed at mid-sized companies.
With $559 million for only marketing by the end of next year, they seem serious; very serious. There are about 2,500 developers on the project. Of course it is more complex than Salesforce.com Inc.
SAP aims to win 10,000 new customers annually and $1 billion per year in new revenue from the new software by 2010.
The first question here is the road map, because there is uncertainty about how SAP will handle large installations.
Second, vanilla for everyone is a communistic service. Everyone needing the same product is not realistic.
Third, the parametrization must be a pain. More so without the consultants since the online service will not have that possibility. Maybe latter SAP will include consultation services for implementing an ERP online.
Of course this is the first stone and with time the question of lack of service and complexity of usage will be answered.
Is this a war announced with the big SAP partners to implement the platform? Should they feel displaced?
Google’s business model assumes that people will entrust it with information about their lives. Google is a custodian of an intimate range of information about individuals. Despite Big Brotherish talk, Google today stores user’s photos, blogs, videos, calendars, e-mail, news feeds, maps, contacts, social networks, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and credit-card information—in short, much of their lives—on Google’s computers. And Google has plans to add medical records, location-aware services and much else. Continue Reading »
