274526_32.jpgMy bet is that online applications are going to overrule over the server applications. IT map has changed so much that I am not afraid of change anymore. In terms of companies, where is Compact, Burroughs, Digital, JD Edwards, People Soft. In terms of  languages we could say that be began with non structured, we study then that only structured languages and then object oriented has come back with non structure.  So I am not going to be surprised that the end of the Web 2.0 ends up with the rein of on-demand applications.

To happen we have to solve the following:

  • 261868_92.jpgLevel of customization: The most successful applications are the standards. Anything that comes in a box ready to plug and play has a degree of acceptance higher than the ones that we have to change. Then For example BaseCamp.com or SalesForce.com are coming together. Myself I am using BossCRM.com which after a due diligence I found better (not so extensive) and not so expensive.  I am working with software to implement a store online, fortune3.com. You can download a piece of software, which is a wizard for more advance features you can use Dreamweaver or even Front page. This site has automatic integration with carriers and credit card companies for collection. Once I implement I found a couple of limitation that bounce back to the support people. They gave me a quote. At this moment I am making the changes. Or rather they are making the changes for me. I guess, this paradigm has chances to explode. I have felt very comfortable and in control at all times.

  • 1419_53.jpgSpeed: I change the internet carrier for my home to one less expensive and with 3 Megas of speed. I was very happy until I saw that I am only at 20% faster that rest of the points of access. This gave me the idea that the highway of communications is coming together. I really think, form the top of my mind without validating with anyone, is that satellites will send Internet signals as the GPS all over the planet with very wide band of communication.

  • 10387_9.jpgPrivacy: This subject is like an arm race at times of war. In the book of Anderson called “Security Engineering,” the prolog says that this subject is a moving target. They finished printing the last edition the last year and the chapters you see are very different than the ones from a year ago. Today social engendering is big whereas hacking few months ago was very important. Another example is viruses. It seems to me that we have controlled them, and we are controlling malware somewhat. But the question remains, what will come next? For this reason a data center at home is more secure than at a chip hosting place, like the thousands on the web promoting hosting an application at this time.

  • Support: The online 24 by 7 is working just find with very impressive service. Now if you like face to face consultants, (yes the expensive ones) most times better than those with packages answers from the Far East. Sometimes when I call my American Express service I would rather to be speaking with Ana at ikea.com (try her, invite her to dinner).
